Do You Have What It Takes To Write and Publish Your Book?

Issue: #3/2009

FINDING THE RIGHT PUBLISHER FOR YOUR BOOK/S

Step 1: Study the book publishing trends

Visit a good bookstore and a commercial bookstore. Browse the section that shelves books similar to yours. Look for the name of the publisher. These publishers should form a part of the list of publishers you will contact.

Step 2: Get the contact information of publishers

Writers Market, lists most of the publishers in the country and the sorts of books they release. It also gives advice about how to submit queries, phone numbers and addresses of publishers. Writer's Market is divided into topics. You can go right to the sections you thinks your book fits. The second book is Literary Market Place (LMP), which is more or less the same thing, but a little less user-friendly, since it's organized from the publisher's rather than the writer's point of view.

Step 3: Contact the right person

Call the publishers on your short list and speak to the secretary in order to get the name of the appropriate acquisitions editor. Ask if there are any special protocols for a submission from an unpublished author (sometimes there are procedures like only send to this PO Box, or only mail by UPS, or only proposals, no finished manuscripts etc)

Step 4. Follow up with a book proposal

Submit a book  proposal. If possible, submit a good sample chapter. If you want materials returned, include postage etc.

Step 5. Submission of manuscript

If it is a positive response, complete the manuscript by the deadline date and submit.

Step 7. Marketing the book

Don't rely solely on the publisher for the marketing of your book. As the author, you must put in effort to market your book.

Dear Friends,
Book publishing is an art, not a special talent. If you are already a published author, we warmly congratulate you on your achievements. If you have been thinking about writing your life story for the past twenty years, but never completed it, the time has come to finally put it into action. Start today; we will show you the path.

You can write a book on just about anything: an idea you have, your pet cat, the a subject you are studying in college, your travels, parenting, coping with the recession, your hometown, losing your job and recovering, changing baby diapers, struggles with addictions, and many more.

Writing a book is one thing; publishing it, another. And then, of course, marketing your book is an entirely differnt story altogether. This newsletter will help you get started.

Don't hold yourself back just because you are not the leading authority on a subject. Life experiences and how you share them are just as important. It is all about how you market yourself. You may have the best possible book saved on your hard drive or scribbled on pieces of paper, but if you don't market it properly, it may turn to dust.

5 things that you need: You need to be 1) hardworking; 2) resilient to rejection; 3) wanting to leave a trail; 4)driven to succeed; and 5) have an idea. Voila!

Happy Valentine's Day! Whether you are single, married, happy, unhappy, far from home, bored, or out of a job, Gifted Hands Writing, wishes every one of you, love.

Here is an opportunity open only to our members: invite someone to place an ad for $20 on our home page, and you win $10 in cash. E-mail info@giftdhandswriting.com for details.
